Taiwan Begins Military Drills

Taiwan’s armed forces launched their largest annual military exercise on Wednesday, beginning 10 days of live-fire training to test the island’s response to a potential Chinese attack.

Footage shows soldiers in Taipei assembling a mortar, receiving instructions and carrying out rifle drills.

The 42nd Han Kuang exercises will run until August 14, combining combat operations with the mobilisation of reservists, civilian agencies and critical infrastructure. More than 5,000 reservists from two brigades are expected to take part.

Forces Prepare For Attack

Taiwan’s military said the scenario begins with the People’s Liberation Army using joint exercises to conceal preparations for an attack, before imposing a naval and air blockade and launching an amphibious assault backed by air and naval fire.

Taiwanese forces will practise breaking a blockade, striking coastal targets, laying defensive mines, moving troops across regions, providing battlefield medical support and protecting key facilities.

Civil defence drills will run alongside the military exercise on August 7 and from August 10 to 13, with air-raid alerts, evacuations, traffic controls and disaster-response operations across Taiwan.

Civil Defence Exercises Start

Ahead of the exercise, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office dismissed the drills, saying no amount of military training could prevent what Beijing called the inevitable failure of ‘Taiwan independence’.

The drills follow months of sharper regional tension over Taiwan. In November, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said military action around the island could create a ‘survival-threatening situation’ for Japan, drawing strong criticism from Beijing and worsening relations between the two Asian powers.
