Indonesia Thailand Strengthen Ties
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto welcomed Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to Jakarta’s Merdeka Palace on Monday, as the two leaders held talks during the first visit to Indonesia by a Thai prime minister in 15 years.
Footage shows Anutin being welcomed by Prabowo on arrival before the pair attend an official welcome ceremony and enter the palace. Anutin signs the state guestbook before the leaders witness the exchange of signed agreements and address reporters.
Trade And Energy Cooperation
Prabowo said Indonesia and Thailand would step up trade and investment by launching a Joint Trade Commission to identify new opportunities and remove barriers to business. The two countries also agreed to expand cooperation in sectors including agriculture, logistics and supply chains.
“In the energy sector, we will promote the Indonesia-Thailand Energy Forum to strengthen energy security and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy […] Indonesia and Thailand are also committed to strengthening cooperation in the digital economy, including expanding the use of Local Currency Transactions (LCT) to make trade and investment more effective,” he said.
Defence And ASEAN Plans
Anutin hailed the close security ties between the two countries and said defence cooperation continued to grow.
“Security cooperation between our two countries has remained close and has continued to make steady progress. Military relations between our two countries are close at every level and across all branches of the armed forces. We have continuously conducted joint military exercises on a regular basis,” the Thai PM remarked.
Anutin is on a two-day official visit to Indonesia, the first by a Thai prime minister in 15 years. He is also scheduled to deliver a foreign policy address at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, where he is expected to outline Thailand’s regional priorities ahead of the country’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2028.
