Rare Whale Family Sighting
A southern right whale and its calf offered a rare glimpse of family life beneath the waves off northern Chile.
Drone footage filmed on Sunday shows the pair gliding side by side near Los Verdes, Iquique, in the Tarapaca region. The calf stays close to the much larger adult as they move through the coastal waters.
Mother And Calf Spotted
Sightings of mothers and calves are uncommon in northern Chile, making each encounter valuable for researchers tracking the eastern South Pacific population.
The population found off Chile and Peru is critically endangered and believed to number fewer than 50 mature whales.
Endangered Whale Population
All cetaceans in Chilean waters are protected as natural monuments, while Chile’s fisheries authority says southern right whales should only be observed from the coast.
