Abandoned tunnel transformed into digital attraction
Visitors streamed into Namyangju’s new Light Tunnel Park on Wednesday, exploring a disused railway tunnel which has been transformed into a glowing digital canvas.
Footage shows families walking beneath sweeping LED displays covering the curved walls and ceiling of the 250-metre tunnel in Gyeonggi Province. South Korea’s first tunnel-style LED media facade fills the former railway passage with vivid, shifting artwork.
Visitors praise immersive indoor experience
“I’m really impressed with how well the media art is done. There are quite a lot of people here, and it is also easy to get to from the city,” a visitor said.
“The children seemed really fascinated and enjoyed it, and I think it is educational as well. It was also nice to be able to enjoy everything indoors and stay cool during the summer,” added a second.
Digital worlds come alive inside tunnel
The display shifts in seconds from outer space to the ocean floor. Galaxies swirl overhead, Earth glows deep blue, and the fiery surface of Mars spreads across the walls.
Moments later, giant whales, glowing sharks and manta rays glide above visitors in a vast neon aquarium, offering an escape from the summer heat.
Former railway gains new tourism role
The park was completed in late March after a 250-metre section of the former Jungang Line railway tunnel, unused since 2007, was transformed into an immersive cultural attraction.
City officials said the project was designed to breathe new life into the abandoned space and create a new tourism destination.
The media artwork changes with the seasons and time of day, giving visitors a different experience throughout the year.
