Malaysia has launched a new initiative to support young adults with autism in transitioning to the workplace. 1 Utama Shopping Centre is the first shopping mall in the country to initiate the Amaze Work Programme.

The programme provides an opportunity for the participants to acquire practical experience and build confidence and practical skills in the workplace. It also helps them take important steps towards becoming more independent while working alongside experienced teams.
First Mall-Led Initiative
The Amaze Work Programme was created to provide paid job placements for autistic young adults. Unlike classroom training, the programme allows participants to learn directly in real workplaces. They will receive guidance while carrying out daily tasks and interacting with customers and colleagues. The practical experience will be expected to enable them to gain an understanding of working practices and to prepare them for future employment.

The programme is the first of its kind in Malaysia to be led by shopping centers, the shopping center said. It hopes to increase opportunities for autistic people to get into the workforce through structured training and support during practical activities.
Well-Known Brands Join Programme
Several well-known companies have partnered with the programme to offer work placements. Participants will have the opportunity to work with brands including Nando’s, AEON, and Starbucks Reserve. These positions will enable them to gain exposure to various industries and develop communication, teamwork, and customer service skills.

The programme aims to build a setting in which the participant(s) can gradually build up their skills, with support from their employers and trained staff. The project aims to equip participants with the skills needed for future careers within a variety of industries and by working with established businesses.
Building Skills For The Future
The Amaze Work Programme focuses attention on the increasing efforts to make more job opportunities accessible to individuals with autism. The programme provides a structured paid work experience to provide meaningful exposure to the expectations of the workplace and helps employers learn how to appropriately support neurodiverse employees.

Businesses can support shopping centers by providing opportunities for young adults with an autism diagnosis to build skills, confidence, and employment opportunities through partnerships. The programme also shows how shopping malls and private businesses can enter into a “structured pathway into the workforce” with special needs individuals.
