Goalkeeper Izairida Shakira Becomes Shoot-Out Hero
Singapore goalkeeper Izairida Shakira delivered a huge moment for the Lionesses as they secured their place in the 2027 ASEAN Women’s Championship.
Facing Cambodia in the AFF Women’s Cup third-place play-off on July 22, Singapore needed a penalty shoot-out win after the match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.
With Singapore leading 4-3 in the shoot-out, the 19-year-old goalkeeper stepped up and saved Sovanmony Heng’s penalty to seal the victory.
Her second penalty save of the shoot-out sparked celebrations as teammates rushed over to celebrate with their goalkeeper.
Lionesses Bounce Back After Heavy Defeat
The qualification was a major turnaround for Singapore, who had suffered a 5-0 defeat against Cambodia in a friendly match just weeks earlier.
This time, the Lionesses stayed organised and frustrated Cambodia’s attacking threats.
Singapore took the lead in the 24th minute when Danelle Tan finished calmly after receiving a long pass from defender Umairah Hamdan.
Cambodia later leveled the match through a penalty in the 74th minute, sending the game into a tense shootout.
Fans Praise Team’s Progress And Fighting Spirit
Following the win, many fans praised the team’s improvement and the impact of head coach Mihoko Ishida.
Some highlighted that Singapore appeared to be moving in the right direction, while also calling for players to gain more experience overseas to continue developing.
Others praised the team’s defensive effort and believed the squad showed clear improvement under the Japanese coach.
With qualification secured, the Lionesses will now join Indonesia, Laos, Australia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines at the 2027 ASEAN Women’s Championship.
