Career Break Did Not Go As Planned
A TikToker in their 30s has shared what happened after quitting a well-paying job without having another one lined up. The creator has now been unemployed for three months after deciding to take a career break, having felt “dead inside” at the previous job.
Before resigning, the creator had imagined all the things that would finally have time to be done during the break. However, when the time came, almost nothing ended up getting done. Most days were spent sleeping, with very little time spent outside the house.
The creator admitted that she sometimes felt like a “loser”, especially when comparing herself with peers who seemed to be doing well. She also wondered if quitting a well-paying job had been a stupid and impulsive decision.
Unemployment And Boredom Led To TikTok
Despite those doubts, the TikToker said there still had to be more to life. She wanted to try different things and push herself while still young. The time away from work also led her to start making TikTok videos. In the caption of the post, she explained the reason simply: “Unemployed and bored, that’s why I started making TikTok videos.”
The creator also appeared hopeful about what could come next. Towards the end of the video, she said that sometimes it might be okay to take things slowly. She believed something was still out there for her and said she was meant for “greater things”. She added that she was “manifesting the next great thing” and wanted to feel alive again.
Other Unemployed Viewers Could Relate
The post drew comments from viewers who had experienced similar situations. One commenter, who said they were 36, shared that they had also recently left a job they described as toxic. They said their savings had gone towards their BTO renovation, leaving them dependent on their husband’s income while they were unemployed.
The commenter said they tried to contribute at home by cooking every day but were still called a “freeloader”. They also claimed they were not allowed to use the air-conditioning and faced other restrictions at home.
However, they were due to start a new job the following week and joked that they were looking forward to being able to splurge on bubble tea again. Another commenter, who said they were 33 and unemployed, joked that everyone should start a support group.
Viewers Had Different Takes On The Career Break
Other viewers shared their own experiences with work. One commenter said they had stayed in a job they did not like for 15 years while living below their means, saving and investing consistently. They said they eventually became financially independent and retired.
Another viewer described Singapore as a country where “everyone is in a rat race” and supported the creator’s decision to leave. One commenter had a different take, saying the TikToker should stop searching for motivation and instead do more things to find out what mattered to them. Another viewer brought up health and mental well-being, saying reduced manpower had made workloads heavier for people who were still working.
One person also asked what had made the creator feel “dead inside” before they resigned. The TikToker has not shared what their next career move will be. For now, three months after leaving their job, they remain on their career break and have started documenting parts of it on TikTok.
