Gyirong Holds Memorial Services

Rescuers and officials in Gyirong County, Xigaze City, held memorial services on Tuesday for victims of the deadly August 26 mudslide, as the search for hundreds of missing people continued.

Footage shows rescuers, police officers and local officials observing a minute’s silence at the Gyirong Port Branch of the Xigaze Public Security Bureau. Rescue teams also paid tribute at the disaster site, where crews continue to search through mud and debris and restore damaged roads.

“After arriving at the site, my mind was filled with just one idea: to start the search and rescue immediately. Every second counts in finding the missing persons. I also want to thank everyone from all walks of life for their concern about us in Gyirong,” said local police officer Phuntsog Drakpa.

Rescuers Search Through Debris

Drone footage shows rescuers and heavy machinery working across the devastated area, clearing mud and pushing towards the border port.

Teams have spent several days searching a 0.7-square-kilometre area around the border gate using life-detection equipment, while nearly 700 personnel work to reopen the G216 highway, according to Xigaze City acting mayor Norbu Tsering.

“Today marks our final critical phase of the operation. We have also released two hotline numbers that provide 24-hour service, and we are actively coordinating with family members while carrying out related resettlement work,” he said on Tuesday.

Roads And Power Restored

More than 2,000 rescuers have been deployed to the disaster zone, battling steep terrain, unstable weather and deep mud while restoring roads, communications and power.

Death Toll Continues Rising

The disaster struck on August 26 after an ice-rock avalanche originating from a high-altitude glacier in Nepal sent a powerful torrent of water, rock and debris through valleys on both sides of the China-Nepal border.

More than 1,000 people have been confirmed dead across Nepal and China, with more than 4,400 still missing. In Gyirong alone, Chinese authorities say 16 people have been killed and 546 remain unaccounted for.

Search, recovery and road-clearing operations are continuing across the disaster zone.
