Helicopters Reach Disaster Zone
Rescue helicopters are ferrying personnel and vital supplies into the hardest-hit areas of Gyirong Port in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, as crews search for hundreds still missing after last week’s devastating mudslide.
Footage on Monday shows a helicopter landing on a school sports ground in Xigaze City, where rescuers load supplies and board the aircraft before flying into the disaster zone. Equipment and supplies are then airdropped to teams on the ground, as rescuers and sniffer dogs search through thick mud, rocks and debris for possible survivors.
Thousands Join Search Efforts
More than 2,000 rescuers have been deployed, with steep terrain, unstable weather and deep mud hampering efforts to reach the worst-hit areas. Emergency communications have also been restored near the port, helping teams coordinate the search.
The disaster began on August 26, when bedrock beneath a Himalayan glacier collapsed, sending rock and ice crashing down and unleashing a powerful torrent of water and debris through river valleys in China and Nepal.
Hundreds Still Missing
The death toll across both countries has risen above 900, with more than 4,700 people still missing. In Gyirong alone, at least 16 people have been confirmed dead and 546 remain unaccounted for, according to the regional government.
Rescue and recovery operations are continuing across the disaster zone.
