Fireworks Light Up Nanjing

More than 200,000 fireworks illuminated Nanjing, in eastern China’s Jiangsu Province, during a dazzling celebration of culture to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the classic 1986 TV series ‘Journey to the West’.

Footage captured at the spectacular gala event at Jiangsu Garden Expo Park on Sunday showcases the immersive 68-minute experience, with fireworks synchronised to the show’s nostalgic soundtrack, while programmed drones danced overhead, forming intricate 3D images of the legendary Monkey King.

The mesmerising event captivated audiences, seamlessly merged traditional Chinese heritage with cutting-edge technology.

Families Return For The Spectacle

“We came because my child is fascinated with the display after seeing it last year. He kept asking to return. The combination of fireworks and technological patterns was breathtaking and truly inclusive for everyone to enjoy,” explained local resident Li.

Fellow local Zhang also shared her family’s enthusiasm for the unique celebration. “Our child has become obsessed with ‘Journey to the West’ and particularly loves the Monkey King. We came two nights in a row! The display, especially the drone show illustrating Monkey King, was spectacular. He even imitated him with his own golden staff, shouting in delight each time he spotted the character,” she said.

A Tribute To A Classic Story

The exclusive immersive experience took place over two nights, blending pyrotechnics, storytelling, and original music to recreate unforgettable moments from the beloved series.

The story of Monkey King follows Sun Wukong, a powerful and immortal monkey who rebels against Heaven but ultimately seeks redemption by protecting a Buddhist monk on a dangerous journey to retrieve sacred scriptures.
