Woman Breaks Down After Friend Shames RM150 Wedding Angpau In Public Online Post

A Malaysian woman has shared how a friendship that lasted 15 years ended after her close friend allegedly criticized the amount of wedding angpau she gave. The woman said she felt deeply hurt after seeing what she believed was a social media post directed at her. According to her, the incident happened shortly after she attended her friend’s wedding at a luxury hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

A Long Friendship

In an anonymous online post, the woman explained that she and her friend had known each other since they were in Form 1. They had numerous good and bad experiences together over the years. She was excited about her friend’s wedding and wanted to attend and celebrate the event.

The woman said the wedding took place at a five-star hotel in Kuala Lumpur. She claimed the groom came from a wealthy family and that each banquet table reportedly cost RM3,000 (about S$910). A live band also welcomed guests at the entrance. To attend the event, she spent around RM200 (about S$61) on a new dress, hairstyling, makeup, and e-hailing transport.

Wedding Angpau Dispute

The woman explained that her salary was limited because she had to pay her car loan, rent, and provide financial support for her mother. Although she knew many people considered RM250 to RM300 (about S$76 to S$91) the usual amount for a five-star hotel wedding, she could only afford to give RM150 (about S$46).

She felt that 15 years is enough time for a friendship to be established and that this shouldn’t be based on the worth of angpau. However, several days after the wedding, she noticed her friend’s Instagram Story, which questioned why anyone would give RM150 at a luxury hotel wedding and suggested that people who could not afford it should simply stay away.

Friendship Comes To An End

The woman later asked two other friends who attended the wedding how much they had given. They told her they had presented RM250 and RM300, respectively. After hearing this, she believed the online message referred to her and said she became emotional.

She explained that her sadness was not about the money itself but about feeling that their long friendship had been judged by the amount inside a red packet. She believed her friend could have spoken to her privately instead of making a public remark online.

Following the incident, the woman unfollowed her friend on social media. She claimed her friend has not come in touch with her since then and wonders if their friendship was as sincere as she had thought.
