Deadly Flood Disaster
At least six people have died and two remain missing after torrential rain triggered flash floods and landslides in Muong Than Commune, Lai Chau Province, in northwestern Vietnam, according to local reports.
Footage filmed on Monday shows widespread destruction across the area, with homes heavily damaged, roads washed away, and trucks and loaders clearing debris. Officials were deployed to assess the damage.
“As of 10 a.m. today, the number of fatalities and missing persons due to the floods is nine, including seven bodies that have been found and two who are still missing,” declared Tao Van Giot, Party Secretary of the Muong Than Commune.
Recovery Operations Begin
He added that authorities had mobilised all available resources for the recovery effort.
Losses are reportedly estimated at 270 billion VND (10.5 million USD, 9 million EUR).
The disaster has also devastated local communities.
“Everything happened so suddenly that I didn’t have time to react. […] My house, car, and all my possessions were swept away. Most heartbreakingly, the flood also carried away my wife and child,” a victim recalled.
Rescue Teams Deployed
Search-and-rescue operations were continuing at the time of publication, with hundreds of military and police personnel, including K-9 units, deployed to the area, according to local media.
Heavy rain battered the mountainous province last week, with some areas receiving up to 300 millimetres of rainfall, according to Vietnam’s National Centre for Hydrometeorological Forecasting. Forecasters warned conditions could remain hazardous and challenge relief operations.
