Messi Retires From Argentina
Lionel Messi has officially announced his retirement from the Argentina national team on Monday, bringing an extraordinary international career to an emotional end.
The 39-year-old football legend leaves the national team after more than two decades in Argentina’s blue-and-white shirt. He made his senior debut in 2005 and went on to become the country’s record appearance holder and leading scorer, with 207 international matches and 125 goals.
His greatest achievement came in 2022, when he finally lifted the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, fulfilling one of the biggest ambitions of his career. He also won the Copa América in 2021 and 2024.
World Cup Dream Fulfilled
Messi’s final major tournament with Argentina was the 2026 World Cup, where Argentina reached the final but lost 1–0 to Spain, denying Messi the perfect farewell.
His decision also follows the recent death of his father, Jorge Messi, which had prompted the football star to question his future in the sport.
Messi emerged from the long shadow of Diego Maradona to become one of Argentina’s and football’s greatest players.
