Planning a solo birthday dinner can be a pretty nice way to treat yourself, especially when you have a decent budget to work with.
One Reddit user recently asked for recommendations for a birthday meal this month, with Italian or Japanese cuisine being their top choices. Omakase was preferred, with a budget of under $350 per person.

The user also had a few must-haves: no prawns, no wine or alcohol pairing, and, most importantly, some really good uni for the birthday treat.
The post quickly attracted suggestions from fellow diners, with Japanese restaurants making up most of the recommendations. Here are some of the places commenters mentioned.
Japanese Omakase Picks Worth Checking Out
Sushi Masaaki at South Beach was one of the more popular recommendations. One commenter suggested it’s a $280 omakase, while noting that the more expensive option is around $380. They also shared that they had the meal for their own birthday and enjoyed it.
Suzuki Restaurant at Mondrian Duxton also stood out, especially for its chill, peaceful setting. A commenter recommended the $250-per-person menu and described the restaurant as one of the most beautiful omakase venues they had visited in Singapore.
The restaurant’s design was another major talking point. It features a traditional tsubo-niwa, or small Japanese garden, and was designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.

For someone looking for a quieter birthday meal, this recommendation clearly caught the original poster’s attention. They said they were picturing somewhere peaceful and not too crowded, where they could enjoy their meal without too much noise.
Other Japanese recommendations included Sushi Kawasemi, Ashino, Hamamoto, Omakase @ Stevens, Gary’s Omakase, Hanashizuku, Shinzo, Sen-ryo, Miyu at Dempsey, Monzushi, and Ryo Sushi.
Several commenters also highlighted aged sushi, good-quality Japanese ingredients, and chefs who are happy to chat without making the experience feel too overwhelming.
More Casual Options Beyond Traditional Omakase
Not every suggestion was strictly traditional omakase.
Willow was recommended for its tasting menu, priced at $258++ according to the commenter. The restaurant uses Japanese ingredients while incorporating flavors from other cuisines, making it an option for someone who wants something a little different.
Another recommendation was Loca Niru at House of Tan Yeok Nee, which a commenter said had recently received a Michelin star. They suggested its omakase as a strong choice, with prices reportedly ranging from around $100 to $200.

However, another diner had a pretty different take, saying the service was quite interactive and the food didn’t really stand out. So, this one might come down to personal preference, especially for anyone into quiet, low-key dining.
For something more chill, Sushidan at Raffles City was also recommended. It is not exactly an omakase experience, but the commenter praised its sushi sets and handrolls.
One Italian Recommendation Made the List
While most of the suggestions leaned heavily Japanese, one commenter made sure Italian cuisine was represented.
Otto Ristorante at Maxwell Chambers was recommended as a fine-dining option with several multi-course menus. The commenter praised the service and said the restaurant could accommodate custom substitutions for allergies, which is a nice plus.

For a birthday meal that feels a little more special without going down the sushi or omakase route, this could be a solid alternative.
With a $350 budget, solo diners still have plenty of options to play around with. From omakase to Italian fine dining, there’s no shortage of ways to make that birthday meal feel extra.
