Paper, plastic food wrappers, drink containers and other household trash fly behind the car as they drive along the highway. Behind vehicles, drivers had to manoeuvre around the debris to avoid potential hazards and damage. A following driver’s dash cam caught the incident on video, which clearly shows the vehicle’s licence plate and model.
A number of highway safety issues were raised.
Road safety experts say it is a dangerous practice for drivers to drop objects from their vehicles while driving. Uncontrolled litter poses a risk on the highways by causing drivers to be blinded, blister tyres or require them to swerve, which is a significant contributor to multiple vehicle crashes. In addition, when substantial objects hit windscreens at highway speeds, they are immediately a hazard to drivers behind.
Highway littering is often described as an environmental problem—it’s an offence that threatens public safety, too. The public posts highway patrol dash cam videos to help the department catch non-compliant motorists, and traffic citations are issued, or legal summonses are issued.

Online, many were angry with the driver’s apparent lack of an appreciation for highway safety and cleanliness. The video has been widely posted on social media in hopes that the person behind the wheel will be identified and that traffic officials will formally discipline the vehicle owner.
In recent years, the authorities have increasingly come to depend on digital evidence collected by private dashcams to punish careless driving. As the general public becomes more aware of the dangers of driving on public roads, the government is urging them to come forward with reports of any acts of peril on the roads.
