Discussions about MRT etiquette are nothing new in Singapore. Giving up seats for older adults, pregnant women, and passengers needing extra help stays one of the most repeated talking points.
Every new incident sparks another round of online debate, with courtesy and public behavior once again becoming the center of attention.
A recent incident, however, showed one situation that required no discussion at all.
One Cockroach, One Shared Reaction
A cockroach spotted inside an MRT carriage caused passengers to move away almost immediately. Passengers shift seats quietly or step aside, leaving a clear path as the cockroach moves through the carriage.

The clip went viral soon after. Comments point out one odd truth. A single cockroach manages to get more people to “give way” than any MRT etiquette reminder ever does. While people may disagree about giving up seats, almost everyone seems willing to give way to a cockroach.
Online Reactions Mixed Humor and Horror
Social media users shared a mix of funny and relatable reactions. Some joked that passengers stayed calm only because the cockroach was walking slowly. Others said the real panic would begin if it started flying.

Several commenters shared their own MRT cockroach encounters, including stories of insects crawling onto passengers. Others claimed they would immediately step in to remove the cockroach, while a few even described it as “community service.”
Regardless of opinions on MRT etiquette, a cockroach inside a train carriage appears to unite passengers in the same instinctive response: move away first and ask questions later.
