A Malaysian couple suffered minor injuries after their MPV collided with a herd of wild elephants along the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2) in Terengganu.
The incident happened at about 10.20pm at Kilometre 274.6 of LPT2, after the Cheneh Toll Plaza. The vehicle was travelling near the area when it struck the elephants crossing the expressway.
Couple Hurt in Collision
Kemaman police chief Supt. Mohd Razi Rosli said the driver, Abdul Wahid Ismail, 55, suffered minor injuries to his left hand following the crash.
His wife, Fauziah Muda, 52, who was also inside the vehicle, injured her right hand during the incident.
The couple was travelling home to Kampung Pasir Gajah in Kemaman from Kuantan, Pahang, when the accident occurred.
Elephant Herd Causes Highway Accident
The collision involved a herd of wild elephants that were crossing the highway at the time. The impact caused damage to the couple’s multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), while the couple sustained injuries that were not considered serious.
Authorities have previously warned drivers to remain careful when travelling through areas where wildlife may cross roads, especially at night.
Wildlife Encounters Along Roads
The East Coast Expressway 2 also runs through forested and wildlife habitat areas, which may lead to animals entering the roadway.
The incident adds to concerns about vehicle safety in areas where wildlife crossings may occur. Drivers using highways near forest areas are often reminded to stay alert, especially during night journeys when visibility is lower.
The couple’s accident was reported after the vehicle came into contact with the elephant herd near the Cheneh Toll Plaza area. No further details about the condition of the elephants involved were provided.
