Rohingya Mark Remembrance Day
Tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees rallied in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday, nine years after a Myanmar military crackdown drove a mass exodus across the border.
The gathering marked what Rohingya communities call ‘Genocide Remembrance Day’, with protesters demanding citizenship, justice and a safe and dignified return to Myanmar.
Footage shows thousands of Rohingya men, women and children gathering for the rally inside the sprawling refugee camps, waving Rohingya and Myanmar flags and holding placards calling for justice, rights and a return home.
Student Mohammad Amin told the rally: “No more refugee, stop killing Rohingya.”
“Oh people, we will never forget the atrocities. 1,800 women were raped on this day alone,” Moulvi Soyodullah, former acting president of the United Council of Rohingya, told the crowd.
The figure could not be independently verified.
Calls For Justice
Sajida, a member of the UCR’s presidential council, said the community was also fighting for the future of its children.
“It’s almost a decade now. We need education for our children, for their future, livelihoods and skills development, that is why we need to go back to our country,” she noted.
More than 750,000 Rohingya fled Myanmar for Bangladesh after violence erupted in Rakhine State in August 2017. Myanmar’s military said at the time that its operations targeted militants.
More than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees are now registered in Bangladesh, with the vast majority living in Cox’s Bazar, according to UNHCR figures from June 2026.
Return Remains Uncertain
Large-scale repatriation has yet to take place, as conflict and insecurity in Rakhine State continue to impede a safe and voluntary return.
