A Malaysian policewoman has reunited with a teacher who once helped her pay STPM examination fees when she was a struggling student more than 20 years ago.

The reunion was shared after she posted a tribute during Teacher’s Day on social media, recalling how the teacher supported her during difficult times.
Struggling Student Days
Ain Ahmad said the incident happened in 2003 when she was in Form Six. Coming from a poor family, she was worried she could not afford STPM exam fees. With only one week before the deadline, she tried hard to find money to make the payment on time.
Teacher’s Quiet Support
Ain said her geography teacher, Koay Aun Chuan, noticed her situation and stepped in to help her secure assistance. He reminded her she would not be allowed to sit for the exam if the fee were not paid. He later helped her obtain the support needed to take the examination.

She also recalled that Koay quietly supported her beyond exam fees. He sometimes placed small amounts of money on her desk for reference books and photocopying materials. Even 20 sen (or approximately 0.20 MYR and 0.06 SGD) was returned to help meet her school’s needs.
Reunion After Two Decades
After many years, Ain, now a police officer, said she always wanted to find her former teacher to thank him. She eventually reconnected with Koay after a long search. She first sent him a fruit basket through a courier before visiting him in person during a holiday period.

During their meeting, Koay shared that he had been involved in a road accident several years ago but is now in stable health. He also said several former students had visited him over the years. Ain’s reunion marked an important moment after two decades apart.
The reunion reflects a long teacher-student bond formed during difficult times in school. Ain continues her service in the police force, while Koay is now retired from teaching in Malaysia.
