A content creator paused in front of a plaque by Clifford Pier, thinking it was another pretty photo spot when strolling around Marina Bay Sands. Instead, the plaque marks the site where a portion of Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes was immersed in Singapore in 1948.
She described the discovery as a reminder that cities often hold stories most people walk past without noticing.
Gandhi’s Ashes Were Brought to Singapore
After Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination in 1948, portions of his ashes were sent to different places across India and around the world for immersion.
In Singapore, the ashes were taken in a procession to Clifford Pier before being scattered about two miles offshore in Singapore waters. Today, the waterfront marks the historic location with a commemorative plaque.
Plaque Unveiled by Narendra Modi in 2018
The memorial received wider recognition in 2018 when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore’s former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong jointly unveiled the plaque at Clifford Pier.
During the ceremony, Modi described Gandhi’s message as one that continues to inspire people around the world. Members of Singapore’s Indian community also gathered for the event, with traditional bhajans associated with Gandhi performed in tribute.
Discovery Surprised Many Singaporeans
The clip quickly went viral, and many people commented on the video.
One commenter wrote, “I have been a Singaporean for 50-plus years and did not know about this place. Thanks for informing.”
Others encouraged visitors to also stop by the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial at Race Course Lane, another landmark connected to Gandhi’s legacy in Singapore.
