Founded by Singapore photojournalist Ngoh Shian Bang, the community project started as a simple idea. He brought homemade soup to a Tampines void deck and invited people to sit down, share a meal, and get to know one another.

The project has grown into one of Singapore’s most talked-about community initiatives. Ngoh’s Kampung Soup Kitchen will be back in Tampines on 28 June 2026 for its second free community meal. The project will provide opportunities for neighbours, friends, and strangers to meet, exchange food and make connections.

Building Community Through Shared Meals

The first session was held at a Tampines void deck on 30th May and quickly gained attention online. Many people loved the concept and mentioned that it was like the old kampung days when neighbours helped each other.

The strong support encouraged Ngoh to keep going. With help from volunteers, residents, and community partners, the second gathering is now happening.

What to Expect on 28th June

The event will take place at Block 160, Tampines Green, from 4.30pm to 8.30pm. Food will be served from around 5 p.m. while stocks last. On the menu are roasted tomato soup, grilled cheese sandwiches, and garlic herb toast.

The event is free, but registration is required because space is limited. Guests are encouraged to bring their bowl and spoon to help reduce waste. Food items that are halal-friendly are also accepted for the event to be more inclusive for all.

Volunteers will be around throughout the evening to help out and make sure guests feel comfortable.

Public Support Continues to Grow

Since the first event, support for Kampung Soup Kitchen has continued to grow online.

People have offered help with everything from printing materials to event logistics, while others hope to see similar gatherings in different parts of Singapore.
