Foreign Law Defence
India’s Ministry of External Affairs defended the country’s foreign funding law during a press conference in New Delhi on Friday, saying such legislation is an internal matter, while also outlining recent talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Responding to questions about India’s Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), Ministry of External
Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that “legislative matters concerning India are our internal affairs on which the decisions are taken by the parliament of our country.”
“I would also like to point out that there are several nations, including the United States, which regulate the flow of foreign funds,” he added.
The FCRA governs the receipt and use of foreign contributions by organisations and associations in India.
Government Rejects Claims
Jaiswal also rejected suggestions that the government was connected to remarks made at a private media forum concerning Bangladesh.
“The government had no role to play in what was an event by a private media entity, and the government does not endorse anything said at the forum, especially with regard to the duly constituted government of Bangladesh,” he asserted.
India Israel Relations
Turning to India-Israel relations, Jaiswal shared that the recent telephone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was initiated by the Israeli side and reflected the close partnership between the two countries.
“This telephone call was made from the Israeli side, and it was received by our prime minister. As you know, with Israel, we have a special strategic partnership,” Jaiswal detailed.
“During the conversation between the two prime ministers, it was discussed how we can further strengthen this bond, this friendship that we have with Israel across various sectors, as both leaders also discussed the ongoing situation and developments in West Asia,” he persisted.
Regional Security Focus
On regional security, Jaiswal stated, “We continue to closely follow developments that happen in our neighbourhood, keeping in mind our national security interests and whatever measures have to be taken in that regard. We take those to secure our interests.”
