Diplomatic Meeting in Beijing
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong met her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing on Wednesday, as both sides moved to strengthen cooperation on energy security and regional stability.
Footage shows Wong, on her third official visit to China as foreign minister, greeting Wang before talks focused on economic ties, defence coordination and shared geopolitical challenges.
Energy Cooperation and Trade Concerns
Following the meeting, Wong told reporters that the Chinese government is “facilitating engagement with Australian businesses on jet fuel.” She described the move as an important ‘first step’ in easing supply pressures caused by disruptions to shipping in strait.
Both sides reportedly reaffirmed their commitment to ‘uphold multilateralism’ and ensure the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global trade route increasingly strained by regional tensions.
Broader Context and Ongoing Relations
According to media reports, Wang Yi also said Beijing was ready to work with Australia to implement consensus reached by their leaders and further consolidate improving bilateral ties.
Wong’s latest trip follows an earlier phone call between Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Chinese Premier Li Qiang on April 7, focused on strengthening coordination around regional energy security.
It comes amid a global surge in oil prices linked to the war in Iran and subsequent disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz – a vital chokepoint through which around one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies pass.
