A customer in Hong Kong was left shocked after discovering a live parasite moving out from a piece of sashimi served at a local sushi restaurant. The strange incident was captured on film and posted online and was soon widely watched.
The incident reportedly occurred on May 9 when the customer was eating at the restaurant with friends. At the meal, the person saw a thin, worm-like thing slowly crawling out of a piece of raw fish on a meat plate. The customer took a snapshot of the scene straight away with a mobile phone.
Disturbing Discovery During Dinner
The short video showed the small parasite moving across the sashimi while diners reacted with surprise. Reports said the customer had already eaten part of the fish before noticing the movement. The customer later uploaded the footage online to warn other people about the incident.
“Sashimi” refers to a popular delicacy in Japan; typically, it consists of thin slices of raw seafood that are eaten fresh and not cooked. Restaurants usually follow strict food safety standards. However, parasites can still appear in raw fish if workers do not freeze or handle the seafood properly.
Food safety experts explained that some parasites naturally exist in marine fish. However, many restaurants reduce health risks by freezing seafood at very low temperatures before serving it raw to customers.
Authorities Begin Investigation
Local media reported that Hong Kong health authorities learned about the situation after the video spread online. Officials are now reviewing the restaurant’s food preparation practices and seafood storage methods.
The restaurant has not publicly released detailed comments regarding the incident at the time of reporting. Similar cases involving parasites in raw seafood have also appeared in several countries in recent years.
Doctors stated that stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or gastrointestinal issues may occur with the consumption of raw seafood contaminated with parasites, but this happens rarely. If parasites enter into the body, medical treatment may be necessary in severe cases.
Public Attention Grows Online
The shocking footage garnered much attention, since many people eat sashimi and sushi regularly in restaurants throughout Asia. Following the incident, a number of customers voiced their concern on the quality of seafood and hygiene standards of the restaurants.
Food safety specialists stressed that fresh seafood should always be stored carefully and prepared under proper sanitary conditions. Authorities are continuing their investigation while monitoring whether additional health concerns connected to the restaurant emerge in coming days.
