A 19-year-old Singaporean says her mother’s severe gambling addiction has left their family struggling with debt, housing instability, and emotional stress.
Over the past year, the family lost their home, were evicted from two rental properties, and fell deeper into financial trouble after rent money was repeatedly used for gambling.

The daughter said the situation became so overwhelming that she had to pause her studies. She also borrowed hundreds of dollars from friends to help her father cover basic work expenses, leaving her with personal debt.
Her mother, she said, spent money on fancy dinners and a vacation to keep up the illusion of financial stability for the family.
Fear, gambling debts, and repeated money requests
The daughter said the mother has been missing home for more than a week and is at a casino, where she is gambling to pay off debts to friends.
The father has reportedly refused to apply for a family exclusion order due to concerns that the wife might cause herself harm if casinos are barred or her finances are cut off.
Steps the family can take now
The daughter was urged to call the National Problem Gambling Helpline (1800-6-668-668) for professional advice on gambling addiction support and a family exclusion order.
The commenters also suggested that documentation of eviction notices, debt demands, messages, bank transfers, and other documents related to the gambling situation be maintained.

If there is a serious threat of self-harm, commenters recommended calling a support hotline or emergency services rather than giving money that could be used to fuel the gambling cycle.
The daughter was also advised to keep her money safe by securing her bank accounts, Singpass and other important documents. She should not take out loans, guarantees, or agreements linked to her mother’s debts.

The daughter is trying to help her parents, but commenters indicated that she cannot end an active gambling addiction by repeatedly paying for its consequences. Protecting her education, finances, and future will be an important step moving forward.
