Internet User Says Elite School Bragging Killed the Mood on a First Date

Facebook

A discussion has gone viral after sharing about a date that went from promising to painfully awkward over a conversation about secondary schools.

The user said the guy was friendly, charming, and easy to talk to—until he suddenly asked her to guess which school he came from.

The user, who said she attended a neighbourhood school, was confused but took a guess anyway. Instead of getting a playful response, she faced a cold correction. According to her, the man seemed offended that she had named the wrong elite school.

The Conversation Only Got Worse

Things did not stop there.

The man then turned the spotlight onto her and began asking about her own school background. She repeatedly told him it was not important, especially since both of them had already spent nearly a decade in the working world. But he kept pushing.

When she eventually revealed the name of her neighbourhood school, his reaction reportedly ranged from confusion to complete disinterest.

For the Reddit user, that was the moment the attraction disappeared.

Comment Section Had Plenty of Similar Stories

The post quickly filled with people sharing their own encounters with adults who seemed unable to let go of school prestige.

One commenter said their boss regularly talks about her junior college days despite being in her 50s.

Several users also questioned whether some people rely too heavily on old school reputations and family connections long after graduation.

The Real Flex Might Be Staying Quiet

One comment stood out among the hundreds of replies.

A user who claimed to have attended several top-tier schools said the genuinely wealthy and high-achieving people they met were usually the most low-key.

According to them, the people constantly bringing up school names tend to be the ones trying hardest to prove something. That view resonated with many readers.

Even though elite schools still carry social prestige, the discussion suggests that constantly mentioning them years later tends to feel less impressive and more like a red flag.
