A new highly venomous box jellyfish species has been discovered off Singapore, alongside an unexpected finding of another dangerous species appearing outside its usual range.
Researchers from Tohoku University and National University of Singapore have identified a previously unknown species of box jellyfish in waters near Sentosa Island.

The species has been named Chironex blakangmati after the island’s historical Malay name, Pulau Blakang Mati, meaning “Island of Death Behind.” It becomes the fourth known species in the deadly Chironex genus, a group of jellyfish whose stings can be fatal within minutes.
Mistaken identity for years
At first glance, the jellyfish closely resembled Chironex yamaguchii, a species previously found in Okinawa. For years, scientists believed they were the same species.
But genetic testing and anatomical analysis later confirmed they were different.

The key difference lies in small structural features on the jellyfish’s bell, specifically the absence of branched canal structures found in other Chironex species.
Lead researcher Prof. Cheryl Ames explained that the discovery only became clear after comparing new samples with older preserved ones from Japan.
Another dangerous species appears in Singapore
The same research expedition also found something unexpected: Chironex indrasaksajiae, a species previously associated with Thai waters, has now been recorded in Singapore for the first time.

This suggests a range expansion of the species, raising new questions about how box jellyfish populations are shifting across Southeast Asia.
Researchers say tracking these movements is important because box jellyfish are not passive drifters. Unlike most jellyfish, they actively swim, hunt, and use complex eyes to locate prey.
Why it matters
Box jellyfish are among the most venomous marine animals in the world, and their stings can be deadly to humans.
Experts estimate they are responsible for dozens of deaths globally each year, though actual numbers may be higher due to underreporting.
