Deadly Fire Hits Russia Gas Complex
Six Chinese nationals and one Russian were confirmed killed – and nine more people were reported missing – after a fire broke out at the Amur Gas Chemical Complex (GCC) in Russia’s far eastern region.
Footage shows the huge blaze at the site and smoke rising into the night sky.
The GCC’s reported that firefighters had extinguished the fire at the site on Wednesday. One hundred and fifty-two people were treated for injuries, including 36 who were rushed to hospitals. The search operation is continuing and Russian EMERCOM aircraft arrived to evacuate the injured.
The fire broke out on the morning of August 25 at the facility, which is still under construction. According to preliminary reports, it began in an auxiliary process area of the pyrolysis unit; the complex’s main equipment was not damaged.
Rescue Operation Continues
Following the fire, the local prosecutor’s office opened a criminal case concerning breaches of industrial safety requirements at hazardous industrial sites.
Authorities are continuing search operations for missing workers while investigating the cause of the deadly blaze.
The incident has raised concerns over safety conditions at the large-scale industrial project, which remains under construction.
Major Russia-China Project
The Amur GСC is a joint venture between Russia’s Sibur and China’s Sinopec.
Once operational, the complex is expected to have a production capacity of up to 2.7 million tonnes of polyethylene and polypropylene per year.
The plant was scheduled to come on line in 2027.
