Firefighters Fight Flames
Firefighters battling a wildfire in eastern Spain are fighting fire with fire, deliberately burning vegetation to help contain a blaze that has scorched more than 800 hectares around Tirig, in Castellon province, on Monday.
Footage shows a Military Emergency Unit firetruck driving close to the flames as crews work to extinguish burning vegetation. Firefighters can also be seen setting controlled ‘technical fires’ through sections of bush, stripping away vegetation that could otherwise fuel the advancing wildfire.
Controlled Fires Used
The fire began on Friday and prompted the deployment of the Military Emergency Unit. More than 300 personnel, 50 ground units and 21 aircraft have been involved in the response, while around 50 residents remained away from their homes.
Crews combined direct attacks with controlled technical fires during their third night battling the blaze.
Wildfire Shows Improvement
Regional Emergencies Minister Juan Carlos Valderrama said on Monday that the fire was evolving ‘very favourably’, with a ‘very high probability’ it could be stabilised.
The crisis forms part of a broader wildfire emergency across southern Europe. By late July, more than 434,000 hectares had burned across the European Union, with major fires reported in France, Spain and Italy.
