Wildfire Spreads Across Spain
A wildfire has scorched more than 9,000 hectares in northeastern Spain this week, fuelled by intense heat, strong winds and difficult terrain.
Drone footage captured in Penas de Riglos on Wednesday shows flames tearing through vegetation and racing across the hillsides.
By Thursday, nearly 900 people from 12 communities had been evacuated as the fire threatened the historic San Juan de la Pena monasteries. Four more communities were ordered to evacuate early Friday after the fire flared up again.
Emergency Response Expands
More than 500 personnel and 22 aircraft were deployed on Wednesday, with the aerial operation later expanded as the fire pushed towards San Juan de la Pena.
Spain’s Civil Guard detained a 28-year-old man as investigators examined whether construction materials from roadworks on the A-132 could have been linked to the start of the fire.
Historic Artefacts Removed
The remains of early Aragonese kings and other cultural artefacts were also removed from the Old Monastery and taken to the Museum of Huesca as flames closed in on the complex.
