Chinese Brands Expand Presence
Chinese carmakers took centre stage at the GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show in Tangerang, crowding the halls with electric cars, hybrids and smart technology as they fight for a bigger share of the Indonesian market.
Footage shows visitors moving between rows of new vehicles, with crowds gathering around displays from BYD and Wuling.
They are part of a growing Chinese presence that includes Chery, Changan, Geely, GAC, GWM, XPeng, BAIC, Jetour and Leapmotor. More than 60 automotive brands are taking part in this year’s show.
Electric Cars Take Spotlight
Wuling is displaying its Eksion family SUV, available in electric and plug-in hybrid versions, while BYD is showcasing a range of battery-powered models.
“I really like the event; it’s very helpful for those of us who are looking to choose a car. Plus, there are so many new brands now, giving us plenty of options,” one visitor said, adding that attending the show ‘is a must’.
Another visitor singled out BYD, pointing to the Chinese manufacturer’s rising sales and growing presence in Indonesia’s premium market.
Market Competition Grows
The flood of new brands comes as weaker consumer spending puts pressure on vehicle sales and forces manufacturers to fight harder for each buyer.
“Sales have frankly slowed down a bit. Many in the automotive world are currently trying to hold their ground, but our sales team continues to look for ways so people can still buy our cars,” a representative from local brand Aletra said.
Chinese manufacturers are now challenging established Japanese, South Korean and European carmakers across almost every segment, from affordable electric runarounds to family SUVs and premium models.
GIIAS 2026 runs at the ICE BSD City exhibition centre in Tangerang until August 9.
