A Malaysian couple reportedly had financial problems after borrowing RM40,000 (about SGD12,000) for their dream wedding celebration.
The wedding looked flawless, complete with dazzling flower arrangements and a pricy gift table and an elaborate wedding dais that was commended by the attendees. But they soon regretted the deal as they found it difficult to cover their own living costs, and repay the debt.
Large Loan For One-Day Celebration
The RM40,000 (around SGD12,000) debt, according to mStar, was not made to buy a house or anything else of long-term value. Instead, the money was spent entirely on their wedding celebration.
The couple reportedly wanted to create a memorable event and match the expectations seen in other weddings. Their celebration included luxury floral decorations, attractive gift trays and a wedding stage designed to look like a palace.
The event went well, and the couple was happy with the outcome, as evidenced by the positive responses from the guests. However, the financial burden became clear after the celebration ended.
Struggling After Wedding Day
Two months after their wedding, the couple found themselves facing difficulties as most of their income went towards paying the monthly loan instalments.
The husband shared that they ate instant noodles not because they could not cook, but because they had limited money left for food after covering their financial commitments.
He explained that they took the loan because they wanted to meet the standards shown by other people’s weddings. The couple later realised that the celebration lasted only one day, while the repayment period would continue for years.
Wife Regrets Expensive Celebration
The husband also recalled his wife saying that they would have chosen a simpler wedding if they had known about the financial struggles that followed.
She said they could have used the remaining money for other experiences, including travelling together, instead of spending a large amount on a single event.
The couple’s story has illustrated that they’re still working to clear off any wedding debts and how they’re managing their finances.
