Customer Waits 2 Hours For Food Delivery, Order Gets Cancelled Instead

A Reddit user reported a frustrating experience with a food delivery app after a merchant allegedly declined to take a large order, even though they had previously accepted it.

The order was placed at 7:20 AM, and the app estimated the delivery time to be between 8:30 AM and 9 AM for 8 people.

The order was noted as “ready for pick-up” by 9 AM, and a delivery rider was assigned. But the rider hadn’t picked up the food. After waiting, the customer checked with the rider around 9:24 AM for an update.

A few minutes later, the rider replied that the stall owner said the order was not something the stall wanted to take and told the customer to cancel if waiting was not possible.

The customer questioned why the order was accepted and marked as ready if the food was not going to be prepared.

Other Customers Have Similar Issues

Other users shared their own frustrating experiences of waiting for hours, only for their orders to be delayed or cancelled in the end. Some pointed out that these situations can happen when stalls become overwhelmed with orders but forget to stop accepting new ones.

One commenter shared that they waited 1.5 hours for their food while the app repeatedly updated the delivery timing but continued showing the order as “on time”. The order was eventually cancelled by the merchant.

Another user said they placed a $150+ order for seven people in the afternoon but received no updates or replies. After waiting until nearly 9 PM, the order was cancelled, leaving them to eat instant noodles instead.

Some users added that similar situations could happen on other delivery platforms too, but said they felt other services were quicker at providing refunds or compensation.

Riders And Merchants Also Face Challenges

Some commenters pointed out that these situations may happen when stalls become overwhelmed with orders but forget to pause new incoming orders.

They said merchants should cancel orders themselves instead of leaving customers and riders waiting.

A former delivery rider also shared that the rider in this case was unusually patient, as waiting too long could mean losing the chance to accept other deliveries.

anyone ever had a Grab merchant refuse to fulfill an order and tell you "just cancel if you can't wait"?
