A Moment That Turned Heads For The Wrong Reason
It only took a few seconds for a routine bus ride to become uncomfortable. A video has gone viral of a long-distance commuter eating biryani from a takeaway at a bus stop.

This is usual, particularly on a longer journey, when people are able to relax and spend hours in the passenger seat. But there was a sudden turn of events after that.
But the man then starts taking bites of the food and wipes his mouth right onto the curtain next to him without a tissue.
The movement is quick, but difficult to miss. The curtain is a shared space which is handled and used by other passengers during the journey for many different purposes.
Reactions to the online news were immediate
Internet reactions were swift and harsh. Several said it was impolite as things such as curtains would be touched by many people on a trip.

Hygiene was the main issue. Fabric surfaces may not be cleaned between trips and this could cause residual material to be left for the next person. Some other person will sit next to that, and won’t be aware of what’s there.
A Familiar Issue In Shared Spaces
The clip has reignited attention on inappropriate conduct in public. Few people are not aware of the proper etiquette for public transportation.

Shared spaces are based on basic comprehension. Things that one does not take with him do not remain with him. Suddenly, it’s someone else. Minor acts may have no immediate consequences, but can have repercussions for many others that cannot be prevented.
Wants Consequences to be made Clear
But after such a backlash, some netizens are demanding more actions from transport companies.
The ideas put forward are to add cleanliness surcharges or penalties for inappropriate conduct that impacts common infrastructure or assets, particularly when it compromises other passengers.

When shared areas are used, they should be kept in good order, and there should be no need to enforce basic hygiene.
This type of incident would indicate that there is a need for basic hygiene to be enforced in shared areas, which should not be the case. One of the expectations for many commuters is that they get to travel without having to deal with anyone’s mess.
