A nine-year-old girl in Seremban, Malaysia, has been rescued after police discovered she had allegedly been confined to a storeroom behind her family’s home during the recent school holidays.

Authorities say the child had been living with her adoptive family since she was just one year and eight months old. However, her situation came to light after a report was lodged with police on the evening of 7 June, raising concerns about neglect and abuse.

Kept In A Storeroom During School Holidays

According to Seremban district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Yatim Osman, the girl was allegedly made to stay in an unlocked storeroom located behind a house in Taman Tuanku Jaafar throughout the May-June school holiday period.

Police investigations found that she was given food only twice a day and was allowed into the main house solely to use the toilet before being instructed to return to the storeroom.

The child was reportedly isolated from the rest of the household for weeks.

Allegedly Beaten For Taking Food At Night

Investigators also found that the girl was allegedly subjected to physical and emotional abuse.

Police said she was frequently scolded and beaten by her adoptive mother over minor matters, including taking food at night when she was hungry.

When officers rescued the child at around 9.30pm on 7 June, they reportedly found visible injuries, including scratch marks on her right cheek and shoulder.

She was subsequently taken to Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar Seremban, where she received medical treatment and remained under observation.

Adoptive Mother Arrested

Police arrested a 46-year-old woman believed to be the girl’s adoptive mother on the same night.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of Malaysia’s Child Act 2001, which covers offences involving child abuse, neglect, abandonment, or exposing a child to situations likely to cause physical or emotional harm.

Convictions can carry penalties of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both.

Authorities have applied for a remand order to facilitate further investigations.

Public Outrage Over Child’s Treatment

The case has sparked outrage online, with many expressing disbelief that a child could allegedly be treated in such a manner by someone entrusted with her care.

As investigations continue, the girl’s welfare remains the priority, with authorities working to ensure she receives the protection and support she needs after her rescue.
