A mother in Malaysia made the painful decision to cut ties with her eldest son after he became involved with drugs and borrowed money from loan sharks. The family from Johor reportedly faced repeated harassment and threats after the man failed to repay his debts.

According to local Chinese-language newspapers, the woman, identified only as Yu, has three children. Her eldest son previously worked in Singapore at an electronics retail store. However, she said he later mixed with the wrong group of people and eventually developed a drug addiction.

Son Lost Job

Yu explained during a press conference that her son lost his job in April this year. After losing his employment, he reportedly locked himself inside his room and began showing unusual behavior at home.

She noticed changes in his speech and movements, which made her suspect that he was taking drugs. Concerned about his condition, Yu later filed a police report and planned to send him to a rehabilitation center for treatment.

However, her son reportedly discovered the plan before it could happen. While Yu was at work, he packed his belongings and left the house. Since May 12, the family has not received any information about his whereabouts.

Loan Sharks Threaten Family

Several days after he disappeared, Yu began receiving calls from loan sharks. The callers claimed her son borrowed RM2,000 (approximately S$570) and demanded RM8,000 (approximately S$2,280) after the payment became overdue for four days.

Yu said the callers pressured her family and even mentioned that her daughter worked in Singapore. The family also received threatening messages warning them about the unpaid debt.

According to Yu, this was the first time the family had experienced problems involving illegal money lenders. She explained that she earns only a small income, while her daughter is currently unemployed.

Difficult Family Decision

Facing growing pressure and fear, Yu decided to publicly sever ties with her son. She said she had no other choice and was mentally preparing herself for any possible outcome involving him. Despite everything that happened, Yu still described her son as a good person who lost his direction after falling in with bad influences. She believes financial problems and unemployment may have pushed him deeper into debt and drug addiction. Also, Yu pledged to hope that her son is able to make his life right again if he could be properly guided and supported by the right people.
