A Malaysian woman has shared an emotional story about a hawker who secretly gave her free meals for two years after her mother died. She only discovered the truth eight years later when she returned to visit the mixed rice stall where she used to eat as a child.

The woman, who shared her experience anonymously online, said she grew up in a single-parent family. Her grandmother mainly cared for her while her mother worked every day to support the family. However, when she was 10 years old, her mother passed away after suffering from an illness.

After her mother’s death, the woman and her grandmother struggled financially. Her grandmother, who had already retired, returned to work so the girl could continue attending school. Despite her efforts, money remained tight, and the pair often survived on instant noodles.
Hawker Offered Her Daily Meals
One afternoon after school, the girl visited a nearby food court hoping to buy snacks. The smell of freshly cooked dishes drew her toward a mixed rice stall, but she realised she only had RM2 (about SGD0.61) in her pocket.
Feeling disappointed, she quietly walked away before the stall owner suddenly called out to her. According to the woman, the hawker told her that her late mother had left money with him before she died. He explained that if she ever came to eat at the stall, he would simply deduct the cost from that amount.

Although confused, the hungry child accepted the offer. After finishing her meal, she tried to pay, but the owner refused to take her money. He even allowed her to pack extra food for her grandmother.
Truth Revealed Years Later
From that day onward, the girl visited the stall almost every afternoon after school. Whenever she worried that the “money” would run out, the owner would reassure her that there was still plenty left.
Two years later, she moved away with her biological father in 2014. At 18 years old, she returned to the neighbourhood and visited the stall again, hoping to meet the owner.

Instead, the hawker’s wife informed her that he had passed away a year after she left. During their conversation, she also revealed the heartbreaking truth. There had never been any money left behind by her mother. The stall owner had invented the story after hearing about her family’s struggles and seeing the young girl staring sadly at the food.
