World Cup Mascots Join Police Raid

Members of the National Police of Peru dressed up as the mascots of the 2026 World Cup arrested a suspect nicknamed Pichichi, accused of selling drugs, in an operation in Lima on Friday.

Footage shows agents from the Tema Group storming a home in the costumes of Clutch, the bald eagle representing the United States, and Maple, Canada’s anthropomorphic moose, to carry out the arrest.

Drugs And Weapons Seized

Inside the home, the agents seized packets of coca paste (PBC), as well as 209 grams of marijuana, a firearm, and cash. Inside the property were the detainee’s daughter and a minor.

The head of the Green Squadron, Colonel Carlos Alcantara, stated that the operation was the result of prior intelligence work that enabled the identification of Pichichi’s illegal activities. “We successfully accomplished the mission of detaining that person who is engaged in small-scale drug dealing,” he said.

Suspect Targeted Through Disguise

“This person we were going to intervene against was a die-hard soccer fan. He was caught up in World Cup fever. So we proceeded to disguise my Terna personnel as the World Cup mascots, so we could reach him without suspicion and manage to capture and detain him,” the official explained.

According to Colonel Alcantara, the detainee is named Carlos Cabrera Heredia, who already had a record for illicit drug trafficking. “He has been admitted twice to two different prisons in Lurigancho and Huaral, and in total he has served a nine-year sentence at the time of the intervention at the home.”

The arrest took place amid the World Cup atmosphere surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup, organised by Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
