Mother Orangutan Rescued
The dramatic rescue of a mother orangutan, and her one-year-old infant, from a fire-scorched forest area in Sampit in Indonesia’s Central Kalimantan was caught on camera on Wednesday.
The pair had been found stranded in a tree, which was surrounded by burned land as smoke lingered after the forest fire. The Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) and Central Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) were quickly dispatched to help them.
Footage shows the orangutan stranded in a tree before falling into a rescue net, after being tranquilised. The OFI team is later seen conducting a medical examination. The exact time and location of the footage could not be independently verified.
Baby Found During Rescue
Rescuers initially thought there was only one orangutan but quickly discovered the infant while preparing to evacuate the adult female. The pair have been named mother Raya, and baby Rayu.
Raya is around 20 years old and weighs about 29 kilograms, while Rayu is about one year old.
Orangutans Found Healthy
Initial checks found both animals in good health, with no visible fire-related injuries. They were taken to the BKSDA conservation office in Pangkalan Bun for further assessment and should later be relocated to a suitable forest area.
The rescue came as fires continued to damage orangutan habitat around Sampit.
