Trump Slams Iran

US President Donald Trump lashed out at Iran’s leadership during a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Ankara on Wednesday, saying he sees no point in further talks and calling Tehran’s officials ‘liars.’

“I don’t want to deal with them anymore. They’re scum. You know what scum is? They’re scum. They’re sick people. They’re led by sick people, and they’re vicious, violent people. […] There’s something wrong with them. They’re cuckoo,” Trump told reporters.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s over. I’ll speak to our negotiators. They want to negotiate. They’re good people. […] But they have to come back to me. As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a waste of time dealing with them,” he continued.

Asked whether talks could resume after Iran’s funeral proceedings for late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Trump doubled down.

“I don’t care, they can talk, but I think they’re wasting their time. They’re a bunch of lying guys,” he asserted.

US Strikes Iran

Trump’s remarks came after US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced overnight strikes on Iran, accusing Tehran of targeting commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

CENTCOM said the operation was intended to “degrade Iran’s ability to continue attacking international commerce flowing through the international trade corridor”.

Iran Hits Back

Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf accused Washington of ‘major MoU violations’, including ‘attacks on southern Iran’.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted 85 US military infrastructure sites across the region in response to the strikes.

Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17, establishing a ceasefire and launching a first round of negotiations in Switzerland aimed at reaching a final agreement.

Both sides have accused each other of violating the agreement in recent weeks.
