A netizen recently asked whether the stay-at-home wife or girlfriend trend is becoming more common in Singapore.

The discussion started after seeing more support online for the idea of women leaving work behind and relying on a partner’s income. The post questioned whether expectations like luxury bags, five-star weddings, and continental cars on a single income are realistic in today’s economy.
The responses were divided. Some viewed the lifestyle as a personal choice, while others saw it as an internet fantasy disconnected from everyday Singapore life.
Traditional role or modern “tai tai” fantasy?
The concept of one partner working while the other manages the home is not new.
People said some Singapore families have been doing this for a long time, particularly with a family income that can sustain it. A stay-at-home partner may be responsible for taking care of the children and for household planning and for daily tasks.

But the online “trad wife” version has drawn criticism.
Many commenters pointed out that viral content often focuses on the luxury side of the lifestyle, showing designer items, expensive dates, and free time, while leaving out the responsibilities that come with managing a household.

Some described the trend as closer to a “tai tai” fantasy than a traditional homemaker role.
Social media may be selling a different reality
The internet has made the lifestyle look more common than it actually is.

Some creators promoting the stay-at-home lifestyle also earn through sponsorships, content creation, and brand partnerships. The image of financial dependence may not always match the reality behind the scenes.
Meanwhile, the majority of Singapore homes continue to depend on dual incomes because of the housing expenses, living costs, and long-term financial planning.
A choice for some, a fantasy for many
The stay-at-home wife trend exists in Singapore, but it remains far from the norm.
For couples who can afford it and genuinely agree on the arrangement, the lifestyle can work. But expecting a single income to fund a luxury lifestyle is where many people remain skeptical.
This online debate shows a bigger divide between traditional relationship ideals and Singapore’s modern financial reality.
