A TikTok user has criticised a fellow MRT commuter for using plastic bags to occupy space near a train door, saying the incident raised concerns about consideration and courtesy in public spaces.
TikTok user echo🌻 shared the incident in a video, saying she was waiting for a train when she noticed a pile of plastic bags on the floor in front of the train doors.
Plastic Bags Used To Hold Space
According to her account, a woman was standing nearby, but the TikToker initially did not think the bags belonged to her. She said she considered informing MRT staff because she was unsure who had left the bags there and described them as a potentially suspicious article.
When the train arrived, the owner of the bags reportedly stood up from a nearby seat, walked over and picked them up.
The TikToker then claimed that the commuter stood directly in front of the train doors, preventing passengers inside from alighting before boarding.
She criticised the behaviour and questioned whether using personal belongings to occupy boarding space had become more common.
In her caption, she wrote: “Consideration for others is dead, y’all 😞.”
The video also questioned whether people were becoming less considerate of others in public spaces.
Commenters Share Similar MRT Experiences
Several commenters said they had encountered similar situations on public transport.
One commenter complained about people standing in front of MRT doors and attempting to enter before passengers had exited.
The creator agreed, adding that she also found it frustrating when people stopped on escalators after rushing through them.
Another commenter compared the behaviour to what they had experienced on train systems in China.
However, not everyone agreed with the TikToker’s broader criticism of society. One commenter argued that it was unfair to describe society as having “degenerated” based on the actions of one person, pointing out that many people still follow proper boarding etiquette.
Another commenter responded that people who spend more time outside might understand the creator’s perspective.
Debate Over Courtesy In Public
The discussion also moved beyond MRT boarding etiquette.
One commenter asked whether people should also object to commuters using plastic bags to reserve queueing space when many Singaporeans commonly use tissue packets to reserve seats at food establishments.
The creator responded that she does not practise the latter, saying she would instead sit at the table while someone else ordered. Other commenters called for greater emphasis on courtesy in public spaces, with one suggesting that a courtesy campaign should be relaunched because people rarely say “excuse me” anymore.
The creator agreed with that sentiment.
The TikToker also said in her video that she had previously been admonished for voicing her opinions about such behaviour. She encouraged viewers to remain considerate of others despite what they may encounter in public.
The video ended with her asking viewers to be part of the “team considerate” group.
