The group of locals, who are protesting against the increased rentals, was assembled outside the Platinum Fashion Mall in Bangkok recently. One of the most visited fashion markets in Thailand, the shopping center brings thousands of tourists to the country on a daily basis. But many small business owners now believe they could be losing their stores due to rising monthly costs.

Visitors, nearby workers, and local media all noticed the peaceful protest. Shop owners carried handmade signs and called for lower rental prices. Some protesters said they had operated their stores inside the mall for many years, but recent rent increases made it difficult for them to continue running their businesses.

Vendors Struggle With Costs

Many vendors explained that sales have become unstable in recent months. Although the mall remains crowded, shop owners said profits are often too small to cover operating expenses. In addition to rent, vendors have to handle their power bills, payroll, and cost of products.

Some of the protesters stated that they sell clothes, shoes, bags, and accessories at low prices and thus have only low profit margins for every customer. They worry that another rent increase may force some family-owned shops to close permanently.

The vendors also said Platinum Fashion Mall became famous because of its wide variety of budget-friendly fashion products. Some believe the shopping center may lose its identity if small independent sellers are replaced by larger businesses that can afford higher rental prices.

Calls for Negotiation

During the gathering, some vendors wore matching shirts to show unity among the shop owners. Protest leaders said they want mall management to begin formal discussions with tenants about rental fees and future business conditions.

Local authorities and reporters were also seen near the protest area as crowds continued to grow throughout the afternoon. People passing by stopped to record videos and photos using their mobile phones while listening to the vendors’ concerns.

Uncertain Future Ahead

At the moment, the management of Platinum Fashion Mall has not released any official statement regarding the protest or the complaints raised by the tenants. Despite the uncertainty, most shops inside the mall remain open as business continues as usual.

Still, many vendors say they will continue asking for fair treatment and lower rent prices until an agreement is reached. Business owners are worried about how much they can sustain their business with the present expenses.
