A parasailing accident in Phuket has led to a police investigation after a rope snapped mid-air, causing a tourist to fall into the sea.

The incident happened near Kamala Beach on April 20 and quickly drew attention after a video spread online.
Sudden fall during takeoff
The tourist was preparing for a parasailing ride when the accident occurred. A speedboat was pulling the parachute and had just started to lift him into the air. However, the tow rope suddenly broke when he was still very close to the water.

As a result, the tourist fell straight into the sea. It seemed scary when it fell, witnesses said, but at that time it was not high. This helped to prevent serious injuries. The tourist survived and did not suffer major harm, though he appeared shaken after the fall.
Investigation and inspection
Following the incident, officers from Kamala Police Station visited the parasailing operator the next morning. The inspection was led by Superintendent Pol Col Anurak Parinyasathirakul. The team comprised marine police, harbor officials, and local boat operators.
They verified the operating license of the company, employees’ paperwork, and safety measures. Drug tests were also carried out on the crew. Officials reported that no violations were found during these checks.
Cause of the rope failure
Investigators later found that the rope had become tangled in the boat’s propeller. This caused damage to the rope, making it weak before it finally snapped. The finding helped explain why the accident happened so suddenly.

Authorities have since held discussions on improving safety measures for parasailing activities. Harbor officials were also instructed to carry out a more detailed review of the boat crew’s actions during the incident. If any legal violations are discovered, the Phuket Marine Department said it will take further action. This may include filing formal complaints against the business owner and crew involved.
