A Malaysian man has drawn attention after he paid RM10.90 (SGD3.51) for a simple meal of rice and taugeh. The experience surprised him, as he had expected a much lower price for such basic food. He later shared details of what happened during the visit.

Simple Meal, Unexpected Cost

The man, identified as Hamdzaini, said he was trying to keep his meal light. He chose plain white rice and a serving of taugeh, also known as bean sprouts. He explained that he is currently on a diet and did not want to eat a heavy meal.

However, the total price shocked him when he reached the counter. He said there were no visible price labels displayed at the eatery. Because of this, he only learned the cost after his food was already prepared.

Price Breakdown Revealed

According to the receipt, the charges were clearly listed. A full portion of white rice costs RM2.80, while an additional half portion costs RM1.50. The taugeh, listed as one type of vegetable with one scoop, was priced at RM6.60. A service tax of 6 percent added another RM0.62.

This brought the total bill to RM10.90. The price of the taugeh alone stood out, as it made up the largest part of the cost. Hamdzaini said this was not what he expected for such a simple dish.

Expectation Versus Reality

Hamdzaini shared that in the past, he would usually pay around RM5 to RM6 for a similar meal. He said the price did not match what he received, especially since the eatery was not a high-end or special place.

Despite his surprise, he did not question the staff. He explained that he was hungry at the time and decided to pay and leave. He also said he plans to continue his diet, as he has an upcoming event to attend.

The incident highlights how food prices can vary, even for simple meals, depending on the location and pricing system used by the eatery.
