Mudslide Horror Caught on CCTV
A deadly landslide struck a construction site for a tunnel road in Kerala, India, on Tuesday morning, killing at least five people, injuring seven others, and leaving another seven missing.

The disaster happened near Meenakshi Bridge at Kalladi in Wayanad district, where the Anakkampoyil–Kalladi tunnel project is under construction. Rescue teams continued searching for people believed to be trapped under the mud despite heavy rain slowing down operations.
Terrifying Moments Recorded
A 92-second CCTV video captured the frightening moments before the landslide. The video footage showed a group of people standing outside a roadside restaurant, standing under their umbrellas as it rained heavily. A green jeep could be seen parked next to the road, and the traffic was running as usual at 11:15am.

In a few seconds, the situation changed dramatically. When a man was walking with his wife and she was carrying an umbrella and a bag, they noticed something that was dangerous. Her husband quickly grabbed her hand and pulled her away. Moments later, a tanker truck was pushed off the road by the mudslide and crashed into the parked jeep, striking the exact spot where the woman had been walking only seconds earlier. The truck mounted the roadside before coming to a stop, sending mud and debris into the air as bystanders ran for safety.
The woman later said she and her husband had been returning home after heavy rain interrupted their work. She recalled seeing uprooted trees and muddy floodwater before running for safety. Although both escaped with only minor scratches, she said she was still struggling to recover from the shock and felt grateful to be alive.
Government Orders Rescue Operations
Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan described the incident as a “very unfortunate tragedy” and ordered Revenue Minister A.P. Anil Kumar and Agriculture Minister T. Siddique to travel immediately to Wayanad to oversee rescue work. Wayanad Member of Parliament Priyanka Gandhi also contacted district officials to monitor the situation.

Officials said the area received 226 mm of rainfall during the previous 24 hours, triggering the landslide. The construction site, located near a popular tourist route, had several private vehicles and a workers’ bus parked nearby when the mudslide struck.
Questions Over Construction Safety
Chief Minister Satheesan said authorities had repeatedly instructed the construction company to remove large piles of excavated earth from the site. A formal government order had been issued on June 20, but officials said the company failed to comply.
Agriculture Minister Siddique said early findings suggested that improperly stored excavated soil contributed to the disaster. He described the incident as a “man-made disaster” rather than a natural landslide. However, the construction company said the project followed all engineering, safety, and environmental requirements and argued that exceptionally heavy monsoon rainfall caused the collapse. Authorities are continuing rescue efforts and investigating the cause of the tragedy.
