On 2 November 2024, tensions over Iran’s strict dress code escalated at Tehran’s Islamic Azad University when a female student publicly removed her clothing in protest against the country’s compulsory hijab laws.
This act of defiance allegedly followed confrontations with Basij paramilitary members enforcing dress code regulations on campus, resulting in her brutal arrest and sparking widespread reactions both domestically and internationally.
According to radiofarda, the university suggested the student was psychologically distressed, portraying her actions as a deviation from societal norms rather than a political statement. University officials labeled her protest as “indecent,” reaffirming their commitment to the dress code and moral standards on campus.
Global Condemnation and Amnesty International’s Response
International human rights organizations swiftly condemned the arrest. Amnesty International criticized the rough handling of the student during her detention and stated that her act is part of a broader pattern of resistance among Iranian women against systemic restrictions. The organization called for her immediate and unconditional release and for the authorities to address the excessive force reportedly used in her arrest.
This incident has reignited discussions about personal freedom and gender rights in Iran, particularly among younger generations advocating for social change. The mandatory hijab law, in effect since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, has faced increasing scrutiny, especially following the protests after Mahsa Amini‘s death in police custody in 2022.
A Symbol of Ongoing Resistance
The protest echoes the fight for women’s rights and autonomy in Iran. Advocates argue that the government’s harsh response reinforces the challenges faced by reform movements.
They emphasize that this act of civil disobedience is a clear demand for personal freedom in a society with strict control over women’s bodies and self-expression.
According to Human Rights Watch, Iranian authorities enacted new restrictions under the “Protection of the Family through Promoting the Culture of Hijab and Chastity” law, which tightens the already strict dress code for women. Approved in September 2024, the law includes severe penalties for violations, such as fines, longer prison sentences, and restrictions on employment. It aims to enforce compulsory hijab more rigorously, targeting both public and virtual spaces, while increasing the power of law enforcement agencies to monitor compliance. Critics argue this reflects an attempt to suppress women’s rights and civil liberties in Iran.
The Need for International Advocacy
Observers assert that global attention is essential to pressure Iran into reconsidering its policies. Amnesty’s call for accountability highlights the importance of international oversight in protecting fundamental rights amid ongoing crackdowns.
Critics maintain that without sustained international support, incidents like this will continue, perpetuating a cycle of protest and repression. Thus, global scrutiny remains crucial in pushing for change in Iran’s stance on women’s rights.
