Students Create Flag
Students in Chennai formed a giant human Indian flag on Friday while reciting all 1,330 couplets of the Thirukkural, in a world-record attempt ahead of India’s 80th Independence Day.
Footage shows students from Good Shepherd Matriculation Higher Secondary School dressed in saffron, white, green and blue, lining up to recreate the national flag as they recite the celebrated Tamil text.
“We have assembled students from kindergarten to 12th standard and divided them into groups to recite the 1,330 Thirukkural verses. We have been practising for seven days,” Principal Sindhuja said.
World Record Attempt
The event, titled ‘Thirukkural – India Flag Sangamam 2026’, was organised with the Raaba Book of World Records, which billed the attempt as the most students forming the Indian flag while reciting all 1,330 Thirukkural couplets.
“Today, we are celebrating the 80th Independence Day of India as a new world achievement. […] These students are not only proud of India’s flag, but are also reciting Thirukkural, which is revered globally for its universal, secular ethics and practical philosophy. The pride of every Indian is being shown to the world,” said Prasanna Ramanujam, Founder of Raaba Book of World Records.
Culture Meets Patriotism
Sindhuja said the school also used the event to mark its own anniversary.
“This is the 80th Independence Day. It has been 40 years since we started our school. We wanted to combine these two and make it a world record that no one has achieved before. We asked for the help of Raaba Book of World Records. They gave us this plan, and we organised it at our school,” she explained.
India officially marks its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026. This initiative sought to combine patriotism with the rich cultural heritage of Tamil literature, creating a tribute to the nation.
