Live microphones at a public training session accidentally broadcasted an off-the-record conversation between reporters while players were running drills nearby.

What was meant to be routine coverage quickly turned into controversy because of the tone and content of the remarks aimed at the team captain.
Reporters’ Hot Mic Misstep
During the session, a private exchange between reporters was unintentionally picked up by live microphones, revealing remarks that quickly drew criticism for their tone and content.
“Why’s he running like he’s leading a military platoon? Does he think he’s in the army?”
“He didn’t even complete his military service. These idiots know nothing about the army.”

Widely condemned as unprofessional and disrespectful, the off-air comments were particularly inappropriate during a national team training environment where players were visibly preparing for competition.
In addition to the tone, the comments also contained false information about Son Heung-min’s military service, which further fueled criticism when the clip went viral.
Facts About Military Service Misrepresented
Son was exempted due to his gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games with the South Korean national football team.
He completed his required basic military training in 2020 and fulfilled his service obligations while also pursuing his professional career.

These facts are well documented, making the inaccuracies in the comments even more widely criticized.
Backlash Over Media Conduct
Much of the criticism since the clip went around has been directed at the reporters and not the player.
Fans and observers wondered about the professionalism of the discussion of an athlete in such a dismissive manner, especially in a live setting with microphones still on.
