What Is This Giant Flame? Internet Wonders About Bright Glow in Singapore’s Eastern Night Sky

A resident from the Mountbatten area in eastern Singapore recently noticed a large orange glow lighting up the night sky.

They posted a short clip online and asked if it was a fire, an industrial accident or something unusual far across the horizon.

What Caused the Bright Flame?

The glow is thought to be from a petroleum complex, the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex in Johor, Malaysia, based on online discussions and local observations.

This facility sits inside a major industrial zone where oil and gas are processed on a large scale.

It has tall structures called flare towers, which are used to safely burn off extra gases produced during operations.

This is called “flaring”. It is widely used in petroleum plants and to safely control gases rather than releasing them into the air.

Flares can be very bright, particularly in the nighttime. The facility is in another country, but in certain weather conditions, the light can be seen from other countries such as Singapore.

Why Does Industrial Flaring Happen?

Flaring is primarily a safety precaution. If the oil and gas plants generate excess gas, it must be safely destroyed in a controlled manner. This will avoid pressure buildup and minimise risk in the system.

Sometimes, the flame looks bigger than usual during maintenance work, system checks, or operational changes. Even if it seems dramatic, it’s usually part of a planned and controlled process.

Can the Flame Really Be Seen From Space?

Some commenters noted that satellites can detect strong flaring activity in the Johor region.

Similar events near Pasir Gudang have appeared on NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS), which tracks heat sources around the world.

While some residents were unsure at first because of how large the glow appeared, others pointed out that the direction matches the Pengerang industrial area, supporting the explanation.
